We have welcomed some new members, and our swimmers are going from strength to strength. Our youngest swimmers are now ducking and diving, submerging underwater and overcoming all the fears from the first few weeks. It’s been huge step, and a real joy for the coaches to see such effort and enthusiasm.
With our more advanced swimmers, we have continued coaching across three strokes: Frontcrawl, Backcrawl and Breaststroke and week-on-week we are seeing improvements in both their technique and stamina.
At the end of Term 2 we had a second successful parents’ forum, this time inviting leading nutritionist Sharon Madigan and physiotherapist Alison Quinn.
They addressed the parents and had some wonderful advice for all of the swimmers. This included advice on eating habits, importance of nutrition when exercising, benefits of exercise… of which swimming is, of course, number one!
We hope that this additional support that this provides is beneficial for the parents and children alike, and intend to hold another at the end of the current term.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb
As some of you may be aware, four of our Straight2Swimming teenagers, our Programme Director and the Head Coach for the swimming club are taking on the incredible challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in August. They’ll be supported on a medically assisted climb lead by Dr Padraig Sheeran.
The Kilimanjaro Team have begun intensive physical training in preparation for the event. To put it in perspective, to climb Kilimanjaro, they’ll be climbing Slieve Donard 6 times back-to-back!
To prepare for this incredibly tough mental and physical challenge training is underway already, with more climbs around Ireland planned for the summer.
If anyone would like to follow the team’s progress we will have a blog on the straight2swimming website in the next coming weeks.
The team would also like to thank Marie-Therese’s sisters who ran the marathon and raised funds for those going to Kilimanjaro. Thank you again Laura and the rest of the team.
Our last session of the year will be taking place on Saturday 20th June. We will have our final parents’ forum running concurrently, and we’ll be inviting another host of fantastic and dynamic speakers to round out the busy term.
Remember City of Belfast Club BBQ is on Sunday 21st of June and we would love you to come. You are all members of a very special club that is part of our much bigger swimming club and all your coaches will be there too.
