The recent Swim Ulster Development 3 Meet in Newry proved to be busy and successful for COB swimmers from J2, J3, Development and Age Group Squads.
The morning session started with a great performance by Claire Allen in the Girls 100m IM: Claire swan a pb time worth a silver medal in her age group. Claire’s exploit was then echoed by Bea Cross in the 200m IM, who swam nearly 4 secs faster than her best time and secured a silver medal in the 14-year old Girls group. Beth Doherty improved her time in the 200m IM by nearly 1 sec, passing the crucial streamline assessment!
The 10m Freestyle events saw good performances by the CoB swimmers: Michael Devlin and Claire Allen came 6th and 5th in their respective age group, with Beth Doherty, Ann Sweetnam, Zoe Martin and Aimee Jackson improving significantly their pbs.
The afternoon session saw some excellent swims in the 200 Freestyle event with good abs being posted by Thomas Price, Joe McKay, Ruaridh Davis and Michael Devlin for the boys, and Jane Kane, Emma Rogan and Ann Sweetman for the girls. Aoibhe Whelan, competing in her first Development meet, put in a strong performance.
In the 100 Backcrawl event, debutant Thomas Price gained his first Qualifying Time, and a second silver medal, while Joe McKay and Ruaridh Davis again swam excellent pbs. Ann Sweetman, Beth Doherty, Chloe Young and the Whelan sisters, Maeve and Aoibhe, all swam good abs. Special mention to J2 swimmers Emily Daly and Ailsa Davis who both showed great promise in this event.
Ruaridh, Thomas and Joe again swam pbs in the 100 Breaststroke. In the girls event Bea Cross, Emily Daly, Izam Kazanci, Jane Kane, Chloe Young, Aimee Jackson and Zoe Martin all demonstrated the strength in depth of CoB Breaststroke swimming.
The final event was the 50 Butterfly, with Luke Heaver, Emma Snowden and Alex Holmes showing big improvements. But a CoB highlight was Claire Allen’s superb 41.97 sec swim, which secured a gold medal and a Qualifying time.
Many thanks to Swim Ulster and Newry Leisure Centre for hosting this very busy gala. Thanks also to our parent volunteers without whom these events could not take place. And a big thank you to all the swimmers who travelled down and gave their very best efforts.
