City of Belfast secured another impressive win at home to a strong Portadown team on the evening of 10 March 2018 in the new Olympia Leisure Centre. This was CoB’s third win of the league campaign, and was all the more impressive as CoB were short a number of experienced swimmers. However the team showed some strength in depth with debutants Emily Daly and Ella Scott showing some great form.
CoB showed strongly winning 3 of the 4 medley relays. However the close nature of these races, indicated that a tough, close contest lay ahead. It was neck and neck throughout the individual races but CoB came through in the Freestyle relays to snatch victory on a scoreline of 205 to 195.
There were many impressive swims on the night but special mention must go to our 3 Group A girls swimmers Claire Allen, Sara Paternostro, and Alex McMahon who swam superbly to dominate the Group A individual races. Kate Kane, Luighseagh Murnaghan and Amber Holmes also performed superbly. For the Boys, Cillian Cranney continued his impressive form to win all his Group A races and Alexander Hale, Jack Heatherington, Max Whiteley and Fiontan Murtagh all picked up large points tallies.
All our swimmers showed great spirit and technique, and should be very proud of their efforts.
We have now concluded the league fixtures in the Aquasprint League, and there will be Aquasprint finals to look forward to now in early June.
The club is grateful to Neasa Murnaghan, the CoB Aquasprint Co-ordinator, without whom none of this would have happened, and to Stephen McKay, the team’s coach, for an impressive demonstration of leadership throughout the League.
